25 Easy & Healthy Tips for Dining Out

Diners have become more health-conscious the last few years, and now want healthy choices whether eating at home or at their favorite restaurants. Luckily, the restaurant industry has been quick to accommodate the demand, so you'll find you have many options to "eat healthy" these days.

Whether you're eating at home or dining out, the same rules for watching your weight apply. You need to eat more vegetables, fruit and whole grains. Choose smaller portions of lean meats, fish and poultry. Eat a variety of foods, and fresh, raw foods are better. Cut back on salt, sugar, saturated fats and alcohol. Drink plenty of water, and include exercise every day as part of your daily lifestyle choice.
So whether you're having lunch with the gang, or enjoying a romantic dinner for two, you can enjoy delicious-tasting foods that are low-in calories and good for you, with just a little forethought and planning.

Here are some easy tips to remember when ordering out that will help you to lose weight even when eating at your favorite restaurants:

1. If you know the menu from the restaurant you're going to, plan what you're going to have ahead of time. This will help save you from making a last minute decision that could result in high-calorie choices.

2. Drink at least one full-glass of water or iced tea before eating your meal. This helps your digestive process, and, because you'll feel full sooner, you will eat less.

3. Don't be afraid to ask for the "senior citizen" special or kid's-sized portions. Most restaurants will accommodate you -- and often you'll pay less as well!

4. Order first. That way you're much less likely to be influenced by the choices of your companions.

5. If you're not sure how something is prepared, don't be afraid to ask. And if the dish is cooked in oil or butter, you can always ask if they have a "fat free" option.

6. If everything on the menu is high in fat or calories, ask if the chef could prepare a plate of fresh fruit and vegetables. Many restaurants offer a vegetarian selection, so if you don't see it on the menu, ask.

7. When ordering meat or fish, ask that it be grilled or broiled, and prepared without oil or butter. (When you eat it, use lemon or herbs and spices to give it flavor rather than heavy sauces).

8. Order an appetizer and a salad as your meal. Or a soup and salad. For dessert, choose fresh fruit.

9. When choosing soup, remember that cream-based soups have many more calories than broth-based ones.

10. If you're having a full meal, split the appetizer and desert with your companion.

11. If you decide to order pasta, tomato sauce has fewer calories than cream-based sauces, just like soup.

12. Choose breadsticks over bread, or if you eat bread, don't add butter. Stay away from muffins and croissants, and choose whole grain over white.

13. Choose steamed vegetables instead of baked potatoes or other starches. Again, use lemon and herbs and spices rather than butter to flavor them with.

14. Whenever possible, eat like the Europeans do, and have your biggest meal at lunchtime. Not only will you save money, but you'll cut down on calories at the same time!

15. Take the time to enjoy your meal. Savor the flavors and textures of your food, and enjoy the company you're with. When you eat slowly, you give your body's internal clock the time it needs to know when you've had enough. When you're full, stop eating. Ask your server to remove your plate so you're not tempted to keep eating while you wait for your companion to finish.

16. Ask for salsa on your baked potatoes, rather than sour cream and butter. Not only is salsa much lower in calories, but it adds a "spicy" flavor to potatoes.

17. Order salad dressings and sauces "on the side." This gives you more control of how much to use. Another tip for salad dressing -- rather than pouring the salad dressing on your salad, dip your fork into the dressing first, and then into the salad. You'll get the same amount of flavor, without all the added calories!

18. Choose brown rice over white rice (or french fries), whole grain breads and rolls over white. Not only are they lower in calories, but they are better for you.

19. Stay away from "all you can eat" buffets and salad bars. It's too easy to lose track of the amount of food you're eating, even when it's salads. If that's your only choice, then stay away from the pasta, marinated salads, cheeses and fruit salads with whipped cream. Stick to soups, raw vegetables and fresh fruits.

20. Have your soup first. It will help to fill you up, and most soups have fewer calories.

21. If you're craving something sweet, and don't want fresh fruit, choose sorbet. If you absolutely HAVE to have the chocolate sauce, use the same trick as you did with the salad dressing -- dip your fork into it first, then your dessert.

22. Split your dessert with your companion. You'll still feel like you got to be indulgent, and you'll only have to exercise half as long to burn off the extra calories!

23. When ordering sandwiches, order them with mustard only, rather than mayonnaise. Not only does mustard have almost no calories, but you won't miss the mayo!

24. If the portion you were served is large, only eat half of it. Take the other half home. Not only will you get two meals for the price of one, but you'll cut the calories in half as well!

25. Go for a walk after eating. Stroll along the beach, walk through a park, visit a zoo. You'll burn calories and get your exercise at the same time!

Weight Loss Tips

Overweight and obesity are major concerns facing us today with a growing number of today's population facing these problems. Weight Loss Tips will help you loose the excess weight and therefore forms an important part of the body care regime. Though not a problem by itself, obesity can lead to severe health conditions like:
  • Hypertension
  • Type2 diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Gall Bladder Problems
  • Stroke
The American Obesity Association (AOA) classifies obesity into three categories, which are:
  • Overweight - defined as having Body Mass Index (BMI) as 25 which, can be interpreted as one fourth of excess weight than normal
  • Obesity – 30 percent of excess weight
  • Severe obesity – 40 percent of excess weight
AOA also states that with the beginning of the 21st century, 127 million adults in the US will suffer from overweight, 60 million from obesity, while 9 million are severely obese. According to a report by the World Health Organisation, there are at least a billion overweight adults in the world today of which 300 million at least fall in the obese category.

Some of the essential tips for losing weight are:

Eat only when hungry, taking small portions at a time Stick to homemade food. Avoid fast food as much as possible Take meals at short intervals of 2-3 hours (instead of the conventional breakfast, lunch, and dinner). This enhances the rate of metabolism in the body Eat a lot of fresh fruits and leafy vegetables. They are filling and are full of fibers, antioxidants, and vitamins and low on calories.

Avoid starchy food like rice. Reduce your intake of coffee as this also increases deposition of fat Do a free-hand exercise daily. This helps to burn calories and keeps you fit.

Last, but not the least, an adequate sleep of a minimum of 7-9 hours a day, is extremely vital as that helps to keep the levels of hormones (such as Cortisol, growth hormone and insulin) under check, which can otherwise encourage storage of fat. Sleep is also a great stress buster. Stress and lack of sleep also enhance the levels of Ghrelin hormone that raises hunger and reduces Leptin, whose main function is to signal the brain to stop eating.

Belly Fat Reduction

Belly fat reduction is a major concern of many people in today's modern society. Our ancestors didn't have to worry about belly fat reduction. That is because they ate different foods than we do and they got all the exercise they needed.

Today however, belly fat is common. Belly fat reduction is important because too much fat on the belly causes high blood pressure and high cholesterol. High blood sugar and heart disease is directly related to too much bell fat. Belly fat reduction is now considered more important than how much you weigh. Your waist circumference and fat distribution around your waist line can contribute to many modern diseases. Your waist to hip ratio is now a measure to be concerned with for good health.

Belly fat reduction can be accomplished by lowering your stress levels. Too much stress in your life can cause your body to produce too much of the stress hormone, cortisol. When cortisol is being produced in large quantities, belly fat is the result. That is because cortisol causes your body to store fat around your belly. Belly fat is more dangerous than any other kind of fat on your body.

To accomplish belly fat reduction, cut down on how many calories you are taking in can help as you lower your stress levels too. Start on a good weight loss program that will ensure you are getting a balanced diet. Start up an exercise routine and be faithful to follow it. Exercise is good for belly fat reduction because it not only increases your metabolism but it also is a way to release stress. Releasing stress is going to cause significant belly fat reduction for you.

Eat more fiber so you won't get hungry as often. Again, not eating as much leads to belly fat reduction. Choose your food wisely and avoid foods that have too many carbohydrates. By reducing your carbohydrate intake, belly fat reduction can be accomplished at a faster rate.

You can find a lot of books that are filled with information on belly fat reduction. Some are better than others, but almost all of them have tips on how to accomplish it that will work. It is just matter of finding the right belly fat reduction program that will work the best for your body type. Belly fat reduction will lead to better overall health for you and is really worth the effort and lifestyle change.

The only way a fitness program is really truly going to work is if you work it. I think the worst thing you could do is read a great weight loss solution and not take action. Focus+ Action = Reward. So always stay focused on your goals. The biggest thing to remember when it comes to weight loss is to not beat up on yourself. Be consistent, workout hard, and plan ahead. Set realistic approachable goals. Make sure that you make yourself accountable to your weight loss goals if you are accountable for your goals in some way you will have a better chance at achieving your goals.

Natural Ways to Lighten Your Skin

Dark spots, and freckles, and skin-damage - oh my! Looking to lighten your complexion? Every shade of skin is beautiful, but as we grow older our skin tone can change. Freckles may appear, dark spots can arise, and skin may not be as light as it once was. So, if you're still not ready to embrace your dark side, read on for a few natural whitening tips and tricks.

Use Sunblock
One of the easiest ways to stay fair is to use sunblock on a daily basis. Find a moisturizer that includes an SPF of 15 or higher and use it every morning after washing your face. Sunblock not only prevents your skin from getting darker, but also blocks harmful UV rays that can cause cancer and premature aging. Remember your hands when applying sunblock, as they are a prime area for age spots.

Exfoliating once a week will remove dead skin cells to lighten and brighten your skin. Mix two tablespoons oatmeal and two tablespoons brown sugar with a quarter cup of milk, and stir until a paste forms. Gently scrub your face, rinse, and moisturize.

Make a Mask
A homemade mask is a great way to lighten your skin and a good excuse to kick back on the couch. Try using one once a week. Use one tablespoon of each of the following: sandalwood paste, lemon juice, tomato juice, and cucumber juice. Mix them all together to form a paste. Spread the mixture on your face and wait until it dries. Rinse and moisturize for a natural glow.

Licorice Extract
Licorice extract contains glabridin, a component that acts as a natural skin whitener. Apply a thin layer of the extract morning and evening, after you wash your face and before you moisturize. Licorice extract can be found at any health food store or ordered online. Be sure to store the bottle in a cool, dark place to maintain freshness. Note: test a small amount on the back of your arm before using on your face to be sure you do not have an allergic reaction.

Remember to love your skin no matter what color it is. It's a part of who you are and that's what makes you beautiful and unique.

Easy figure fixes, Fashion solutions for your body type

Every woman has something about her body she'd like to hide, whether it's heavy thighs, a pudgy tummy or a too-round bottom. With just a few visual tricks, your problem areas will disappear and let your true beauty shine through!

If your hips are wider than your shoulders and your thighs are round, you have a classic pear-shaped body. Dressing is a snap if you remember to accentuate the positives: a shapely waist, delicate upper body and attractive shoulders and arms.

  • Avoid anything too tight.
  • A-line skirts that hit around the knee area are ideal because they draw attention away from problem areas. Miniskirts are generally a bad idea because they accentuate heavy thighs.
  • Pant waists should fall somewhere below the natural waistline for a better fit. A straight or slightly bootcut leg is the most flattering. Avoid patterned or light-colored pants. Skip fussy details like big cargo pockets, rouching or excessive zippers around the hip area.
  • Shorts can be tricky, but for workouts and casual wear choose lightweight, loose-fitting shorts (no bike shorts). Slimming side stripes on shorts can give the illusion of sleekness.

  • Avoid too-baggy tops or too-tight tops: the looser tops will make you look large all over, the tight tops will make you look out of proportion to your hips. Look for fitted -- not skintight -- T-shirts (something with some stretch) and button-front tops. V-necks, turtlenecks and open collars all call attention to the face, which is always a good thing.
  • Jackets and blazers should hit anywhere but the widest point of your hips. That could mean right below the waist to mid-thigh, depending on your height. Wear jackets and blazers open for the best vertical lines.

  • Look for dresses that nip in at the waist and slightly flare out over hips and thighs.
  • You can pull off a full-skirted ballgown because it will hide heavy hips and thighs.
  • Try sleeveless and strapless dresses to play up pretty shoulders and arms.
  • An empire, or raised waist dress brings the eye up away from problem areas. Careful, though. Sometimes this gets mistaken for a maternity look with fuller figures.

The apple-shaped body is usually softer around the middle and has heavier breasts, with narrower hips and slimmer legs. Make the most of your womanly figure by showing off your legs and great cleavage.

  • Avoid too tight (plays up large breasts too much) and too baggy (just makes you look heavier). Opt for fabrics that skim the body, preferably knits and wovens with stretch for a better fit.
  • V-neck, boatneck, turtle and mock necks and shirt collars are your most flattering necklines.
  • Play up nice cleavage with a peek, not a Dolly Parton-sized slice. Especially appealing: a pretty lace-trimmed cami showing under a jacket or top.
  • Avoid full sleeves or puffy sleeves.

  • Balance out a top-heavy figure with an A-line skirt that will give you the look of a waist and more of an hourglass look.
  • Choose flat-front, never pleated, pants that have a lower rise than the natural waist.
  • Five-pocket jeans are your friend! Front pockets on jeans help disguise a tummy problem, while back pockets can help define a flatter rear common to top-heavy women.
  • Avoid anything too tight -- from pencil skirts to skintight jeans -- because it will only accentuate top heaviness.
  • Play up nice legs with shorter (an inch above the knee) skirts.

  • One-piece dressing is tricky for you. Best bets: A sleeveless black sheath, a soft princess seamed dress, a strapless dress with corseted top.
  • Resist the urge to cover up head-to-toe: showing a little skin, whether it's bare arms or shoulders, is much more flattering.

Body basics for every figure

  • Wear colors that look great on you. Not sure what those are? Grab a trusted friend and head to the mall. Hold up tons of colors next to your face and get feedback from your friend. Hues that compliment most complexions: pink, blue, white (you'll just need to change the intensity of these colors to suit your coloring, i.e. hot pink for darker skins, carnation for fairer, ivory for olive tones, etc.)
  • Nobody looks good in high-waisted, pleated pants with narrow ankle openings, but manufacturers still turn these out in droves. Avoid!
  • Don't worry about being trendy when you look at what suits your figure: concentrate on what flatters, and add up-to-date shoes, handbags and accessories later.

8 Ways to Flatter a Bottom-Heavy Figure

Balance Figure with Color, Fitted Pieces

You can wear a fitted suit, even with a slim skirt, if you are bottom heavy. Just remember:
  • Keep the line long by using all one color with slim-cut pieces. It elongates and slims the figure.
  • Choose fitted jackets that end well above your widest point.
  • Wear a top or jacket with structured shoulders, puffy sleeves, etc. to balance out your larger bottom half.
  • Rely on a form-fitting, but never tight, skirt in a non-clingy fabric.

Think Fit and Flare

One of the classic recommendations for the bottom-heavy figure is the full skirt. It's still a great option, especially for dresses. How to make the full skirt work:
  • Go for a fit and flare silhouette. Draw attention to the waist with a belt, gathers, band or other feature. The skirt should flare out from the fitted waist.
  • Take the fit and flare silhouette one step further by opting for a strapless dress. You'll get the benefit of showing off your shoulders, while concealing your hips. Also, the strong line of bare shoulders helps balance a wider bottom half.

Find Jeans That Flatter

You can look great in jeans. The key is to choose leg openings and back pockets to fit your figure. Here's how:
  • Bootcut leg openings are the most flattering jean legs of all. The slight flare balances out wider hips and fuller thighs.
  • Opt for a darker wash jean for the most slimming look.
  • Five-pocket styling looks best, but you'll want to avoid excessive embellishment on the back pockets if the size of your backside bothers you.
  • The longer the jeans, the longer (and thinner) your legs look. Wear bootcut jeans as long as you possibly can without having them bunch up around your legs. If you can stand them, pair jeans with high heels for a super-flattering look.

Put Prints on Your Smallest Feature

Another way to balance the bottom-heavy figure is to accentuate your top half with prints.

Vertical stripes, menswear checks or plaids, florals and polka dots are all great options.

Wear a solid pant or skirt and keep jackets short (never let a jacket end right at the widest point of your hips).

Go for a Raised Waist

If your natural waistline is thick, along with full hips and thighs, one of your best options in dresses is the empire-waist (raised waist) dress. With this silhouette, the focus is shifted to only the top third of your body because the waist falls right below the bustline. This look works best with pear-shaped women who are small-busted.

Pick a Pretty Neckline

You don't need a plunging V-neck or tons of cleavage to pull this off. What you do need is added interest -- a sweetheart neckline, a halter, a knotted front -- to draw attention up and towards your face.

Light on Top, Dark on Bottom

As basic as it sounds, the best way to use color to camouflage/highlight figure areas is to use contrasts. The black bottom with white top works like a dream: it brings the eye up to the lightest hue and the top half of the body.

Choose Slimming Swimwear

The idea of high-cut legs on your swimsuit may make you uncomfortable, but they are a flattering way to make your legs look miles long. Here are more Do's and Don'ts for swimwear:
  • Don't wear boy shorts. They'll look boxy on you because they accentuate thighs.
  • Do choose swimwear with graphic interest -- vertical stripes, colorblocking -- strategically placed to draw the eye up.
  • Don't wear a teeny-weeny bikini bottom. The less fabric on bottom, the fleshier you'll look from the waist down.
